This site features natural thermal pools and associated facilities situated in a desert environment.

Visual Characteristics

The hot springs consist of several distinct pools with water temperatures ranging from 40°C to 65°C. The water is clear with a slight mineral opacity. The surrounding terrain is arid, characterized by sand and sparse desert vegetation. The pools are constructed with concrete basins and stone edging.

Location & Access Logistics

Aguas Termales de Calientes is situated approximately 45 kilometers northwest of the city center of Tacna. Access is via the Carretera Tacna-Tarata (PE-26) for 35 kilometers, then turning onto a well-maintained dirt road for the remaining 10 kilometers. Ample parking is available on-site. Public transport options are limited; shared taxis (colectivos) can be hired from Tacna, but direct bus routes are not available.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The thermal springs are a result of geothermal activity in the region, with water heated by subterranean volcanic processes. The springs have been utilized by local communities for centuries for their perceived therapeutic properties. The current infrastructure was developed in the mid-20th century.

Key Highlights & Activities

Bathing in the thermal pools is the primary activity. Visitors can utilize the different temperature pools. Foot baths are available. Observation of the surrounding desert landscape is also possible.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available. Limited shade structures are present over some seating areas. Cell phone signal (4G) is intermittent. Food vendors are typically present on weekends and holidays, offering local snacks and beverages.

Best Time to Visit

For comfortable bathing temperatures, the early morning or late afternoon is recommended, particularly during the warmer months (December to March). The cooler months (June to August) offer a more pleasant experience for the surrounding environment. The site is accessible year-round.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests that bathing in these waters can cure various ailments, a belief supported by the high mineral content of the water, including sulfur and sodium bicarbonate. A specific tip for visitors is to bring a towel and water shoes, as the pool edges can be slippery.
