Alte Brücke (Old Bridge), officially the Karl-Theodor-Brücke, is a landmark stone bridge spanning the Neckar River, connecting the Old Town with the Neuenheim district.
Visual Characteristics
The bridge is a massive arched structure built from red Neckar sandstone. It features nine arches and is anchored on the Old Town side by a medieval twin-towered gate (Brückentor). The bridge is decorated with several monumental sculptures, most notably the statue of Prince-elector Karl Theodor and the statue of Minerva.

Historical Origin
The current stone bridge was built between 1786 and 1788 under Prince-elector Karl Theodor. It is the ninth bridge built on this site; previous versions were made of wood and were repeatedly destroyed by floods, ice, or war. In 1945, German troops blew up the fifth and sixth arches to hinder the Allied advance; the damage was repaired and the bridge fully restored by 1947.
Key Highlights & Activities
Bridge Monkey (Brückenaffe): A bronze sculpture of a monkey holding a mirror. Touching the mirror is said to bring wealth, touching the fingers brings a return to Heidelberg, and touching the nearby bronze mice brings fertility.
Brückentor (Bridge Gate): The historic southern entrance, once part of the city wall, featuring original portcullis grooves and former prison cells in the towers.
Statue of Karl Theodor: Commemorates the bridge's builder, surrounded by allegorical figures representing the four main rivers of his territories (Rhine, Danube, Neckar, Moselle).
Love Locks: Like many European bridges, the railings often feature padlocks placed by couples.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The bridge is a flat, paved walkway suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Public restrooms are available nearby at the Rathaus (City Hall). 5G signal is exceptional.
Best Time to Visit
Sunset: To see the castle and the bridge's red sandstone illuminated by the evening sun.
Castle Illuminations: The bridge is the primary viewing platform for the fireworks and "castle burning" events held three times per year.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the bridge's resistance to "ice drift"; the massive pointed ice-breakers on the upstream side of the pillars were an engineering innovation to prevent the structural failures that destroyed its wooden predecessors. Legend states the original 15th-century "Bridge Monkey" was intended to remind both city dwellers and outsiders to check their own vanity before entering or leaving the city.
