Anse Source d'Argent, La Digue, Seychelles, Africa
Anse Source d'Argent is a beach located on the island of La Digue in the Seychelles archipelago.
This coastal area is characterized by its distinctive granite boulder formations, fine white sand, and shallow, clear turquoise waters.
Visual Characteristics
The beach features large, weathered granite boulders of varying sizes and shapes, often covered in moss and vegetation. The sand is fine-grained and pale white. The water is shallow, calm, and exhibits shades of turquoise and light blue, with coral reefs visible beneath the surface. Coconut palms and other tropical vegetation line the shore.
Location & Access Logistics
Anse Source d'Argent is situated on the southwestern coast of La Digue. Access is typically via L'Union Estate, a private property requiring an entrance fee. From the main village of La Passe, it is approximately a 3km cycle or walk. Parking is available at the L'Union Estate entrance. No public transport directly serves the beach; access is on foot or by bicycle from within the estate.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The granite boulders are geological formations resulting from the erosion of ancient Precambrian granitic rock, a process that occurred millions of years ago. The beach itself is part of a coastal ecosystem influenced by tidal patterns and marine life.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include swimming in the shallow waters, photography of the rock formations and coastline, and wading. Snorkeling is possible in designated areas, particularly around the coral formations. Access to the beach is facilitated by walking paths through L'Union Estate.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within L'Union Estate. Shade is provided by coconut palms and other trees. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food vendors and small restaurants are located near the entrance to L'Union Estate, outside the immediate beach area.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is generally in the late afternoon when the sun angle creates shadows on the granite boulders. The dry season, from June to October, offers the most favorable weather conditions with less rainfall. Low tide can expose more of the sand and rock formations.
Facts & Legends
Anse Source d'Argent is frequently cited as one of the most photographed beaches globally. Historically, the area was part of a coconut plantation, and remnants of this past, including old copra kilns, can be found within L'Union Estate.
