Aural Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, Koh Kong, Cambodia, Asia

Aural Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in Koh Kong Province, Cambodia. It encompasses a significant portion of the Cardamom Mountains.

Visual Characteristics

The sanctuary features dense evergreen forest, characterized by a high canopy and undergrowth. Elevations range from approximately 100 meters to over 1,700 meters. The terrain is mountainous, with steep slopes and river valleys. Water bodies within the sanctuary are typically clear, flowing rivers and streams.

Location & Access Logistics

The sanctuary is situated approximately 150 kilometers west of Phnom Penh. Access is primarily via National Road 48 towards Koh Kong town. From Koh Kong town, local roads and unpaved tracks lead into the sanctuary's periphery. Specific entry points may require 4x4 vehicles, especially during the wet season. Public transport to Koh Kong town is available via bus services from Phnom Penh. There is no direct public transport into the sanctuary itself.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Aural Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1993. It is part of the larger Cardamom Mountains ecosystem, a biodiversity hotspot. The area is geologically characterized by ancient metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, shaped by erosion and tectonic activity over millions of years. Ecologically, it represents a significant tract of tropical rainforest.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking is possible on designated trails, with varying difficulty levels. Birdwatching is a primary activity due to the diverse avian population. Wildlife observation, including potential sightings of mammals like gibbons and various deer species, is also a focus. Photography of flora and fauna is permitted.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic visitor facilities, including some designated rest areas and information points, may be present near entry zones. Restrooms are limited and generally found at ranger stations or designated entry points. Shade is abundant within the forest canopy. Cell phone signal is unreliable and often absent within the sanctuary's interior.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable conditions for access and outdoor activities. The early morning and late afternoon provide optimal lighting for photography. There are no specific tide requirements as the sanctuary is landlocked.

Facts & Legends

Aural Mountain is the highest point in Cambodia, reaching an elevation of 1,771 meters. Local folklore speaks of spirits inhabiting the mountain's higher reaches, influencing weather patterns and the behavior of wildlife.
