Barzan Towers, Umm Salal, Qatar, Asia
The Barzan Towers are a pair of historical watchtowers located in Umm Salal Mohammed, Qatar.
These structures served a defensive purpose, guarding the traditional routes into the city.
Visual Characteristics
The towers are constructed from rough coral stone and limestone. Each tower stands approximately 14 meters (46 feet) high and features a square base that tapers towards the top. They are characterized by their robust, unadorned exteriors and internal spiral staircases. The original towers were built in the 19th century, with a reconstruction and addition of a third, larger tower completed in 1910.
Location & Access Logistics
The Barzan Towers are situated in Umm Salal Mohammed, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Doha city center. Access is via Al Shamal Road (Highway 1). Turn off onto Al Khor Coastal Road and follow signs for Umm Salal Mohammed. Ample free parking is available adjacent to the towers. No public transport directly serves the site; a private vehicle is recommended.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The original towers were constructed in the late 19th century by Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani. Their primary purpose was to serve as watchtowers, providing early warning of approaching Ottoman forces and pearl diving fleets. The reconstruction in 1910 added a larger, central tower, enhancing their defensive capabilities. The materials used, coral stone and limestone, are locally sourced.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can ascend the towers via internal staircases to observe the surrounding landscape. The ground floor of the central tower has been converted into a small museum detailing local history and the towers' function. Photography of the architecture and the panoramic views from the upper levels is permitted.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available on-site. Limited shade is provided by the tower structures themselves. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong in this area. No food vendors are located directly at the towers; dining options are available in the nearby city of Umm Salal Mohammed.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal time for visiting is during the cooler months, from October to April. Mid-morning (9:00 AM - 11:00 AM) or late afternoon (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM) offers more comfortable temperatures and favorable lighting for photography. Avoid midday during summer months due to high temperatures.
Facts & Legends
A unique feature of the towers is the presence of two mosques built into the ground floor of the central tower. Local lore suggests the towers were also used to observe the moon for the start of Ramadan, a practice common in traditional Qatari communities.
