Batumi Lighthouse, Batumi, Georgia, Asia

The Batumi Lighthouse is a navigational aid located on the Black Sea coast in Batumi, Georgia.

This structure serves to guide maritime traffic into the port of Batumi.

Visual Characteristics

The lighthouse is a cylindrical tower constructed from reinforced concrete. It stands approximately 30 meters in height. The exterior is painted white, with a red band encircling the upper section just below the lantern room. The lantern room itself is enclosed by glass panels and topped with a metal dome.

Location & Access Logistics

The lighthouse is situated at the end of a pier extending into the Black Sea, approximately 1.5 kilometers west of the Batumi city center. Access is via a paved walkway leading from the main promenade. Limited public parking is available along the promenade. Public transport, including bus lines 1, 7, and 10, stop near the promenade entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The current Batumi Lighthouse was constructed in 1936. Its original purpose was to facilitate safe navigation for ships entering and departing the Port of Batumi, which was a significant Soviet naval base and commercial hub.

Key Highlights & Activities

Observation of the lighthouse structure from the promenade. Photography of the lighthouse against the Black Sea backdrop. Walking along the pier to the base of the lighthouse (access to the interior is restricted).

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available along the main promenade. Shade is limited on the pier itself. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong. Food vendors and cafes are located on the promenade adjacent to the lighthouse.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the late afternoon provides favorable lighting conditions as the sun sets over the Black Sea. The months of May through September offer the most stable weather patterns for outdoor visits. Tidal variations do not significantly impact access to the lighthouse.

Facts & Legends

During the Soviet era, the lighthouse was reportedly equipped with a powerful foghorn that could be heard for several kilometers. Local lore suggests that on exceptionally clear nights, the light from the Batumi Lighthouse can be seen from the coast of Turkey.
