Beguinage of Kortrijk, Kortrijk, Belgium, Europe
The Beguinage of Kortrijk (Sint-Elisabethbegijnhof) is a residential complex and UNESCO World Heritage site located in the northern sector of the historic city center of Kortrijk, Belgium. It consists of a series of 41 whitewashed houses and communal structures originally built to house Beguines, a lay religious community of women.
Visual Characteristics
The site features a distinctive architecture of white-painted brick houses with red-tiled gabled roofs, dating primarily from the 17th century. The cobblestone alleys are narrow and arranged in a semi-enclosed courtyard pattern. Key structures include the Baroque-style Chapel of Saint Matthew and the Grand Mistress’s house, which is notable for its larger scale and ornate facade.
Location & Access Logistics
The beguinage is situated between the Grote Markt and the river Leie, accessible via the main gatehouse on Begijnhofstraat. It is located 600 meters north of the Kortrijk Railway Station, approximately an 8-minute walk. De Lijn bus lines 71, 72, and 74 serve the "Kortrijk Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk" stop nearby. Underground vehicle parking is available at Parking Broel, 300 meters to the north.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Founded in 1238 by Joan, Countess of Flanders, the site was repeatedly destroyed during regional conflicts, including the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302 and French sieges in the 17th century. Most current structures were rebuilt between 1600 and 1700. It transitioned from a religious commune to a protected heritage site after the death of the last Beguine, Marcella Pattyn, in 2013.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk through the preserved medieval street layout and enter the Beguinage Experience Center (Museum), which utilizes digital displays to explain the daily lives of the Beguines. The Chapel of Saint Matthew is open for quiet reflection. The "Hortus Conclusus" or enclosed garden displays traditional medicinal herbs.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The beguinage is a quiet zone with paved but uneven cobblestone paths. Public restrooms are located inside the Experience Center. There is consistent 4G/5G cellular signal throughout the site. While there are no shops or vendors inside the residential area to maintain silence, the entrance is within 100 meters of the cafes on the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April–May) is the best time to see the communal gardens in bloom. For photography, the late afternoon provides soft light that highlights the contrast between the white brick walls and red roofs. The site is accessible during daylight hours, generally closing at dusk to respect the privacy of current residents.
Facts & Legends
The last Beguine in the world, Marcella Pattyn, lived in this community until she moved to a nursing home shortly before her death in 2013, marking the official end of an 800-year-old social and religious tradition.
