Beskuca Palace, Kotor, Montenegro, Europe
Beskuća Palace is a late 18th-century noble residence located on the main street connecting the Square of the Arms and Flour Square in Kotor-old-town_kotor" class="underline">Kotor Old Town. It is primarily recognized for its elaborate Gothic portal, which was salvaged from an older building.
Visual Characteristics
The palace facade is relatively simple and made of local limestone, following the late Baroque style. Its most significant feature is the Flamboyant Gothic portal, which predates the palace itself (15th century). The portal is highly ornate, featuring carvings of foliage, lions, and the coat of arms of the Bizanti family. A stone relief above the entrance displays the Beskuća family crest: a hand holding a house, symbolizing their name (which literally translates to "homeless").
Location & Access Logistics
The palace is situated in the central sector of the Old Town, approximately 80 meters east of the Sea Gate. As with all sites in the Old Town, access is pedestrian-only. The building currently houses commercial spaces on the ground floor and private apartments above; the interior is not open to the public as a museum.
Historical & Economic Origin
The Beskuća family was a merchant family from Prčanj that rose to nobility in the late 17th century. The palace was built in 1776 during the Venetian administration. The family's wealth was derived from maritime trade and land ownership in the Boka Bay and Italy. The structure was repaired following the 1979 earthquake, maintaining its original facade and portal.
Key Highlights & Activities
The primary activity is the observation and photography of the Gothic portal, which is considered one of the finest examples of medieval stone masonry in the Adriatic. Visitors can also view the family crest, which serves as a visual pun on the family name. The palace is a standard stop on architectural walking tours of Kotor.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The palace is located on a primary pedestrian thoroughfare. 4G and 5G cellular coverage is excellent. Numerous cafes, pharmacies, and shops are located in the immediate vicinity. There are no public restrooms within the building; facilities are available at the Sea Gate.
Best Time to Visit
The portal is best viewed in the morning or early afternoon when sunlight penetrates the narrow street. To avoid the highest density of tourist traffic, visits before 09:00 or after 19:00 are recommended.
Facts & Legends
The family name "Beskuća" (Homeless) is the subject of a well-known local legend. It is said that the family founder arrived in Kotor with nothing, and as he grew wealthy, he vowed to build 100 houses across the Boka Bay and then change his name to "Stokuća" (Hundred-houses). He reportedly reached 99 houses before his death, so the name Beskuća remained.
