Historical & Ecological Origin

Established in 1947, Black Hills National Cemetery was created to provide a national burial site for veterans in the northern Great Plains region. The land was acquired by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The ecological setting is mixed-grass prairie transitioning to ponderosa pine forest at higher elevations surrounding the immediate cemetery grounds.

The primary purpose is interment and memorialization. Visitors may walk the grounds to pay respects. The Avenue of Flags displays the U.S. flag daily. Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies are held annually.

Facts & Legends

A unique feature is the "Wall of Honor," which lists the names of veterans interred here, including those whose remains are not present. The cemetery is situated on land that was historically part of the Lakota Sioux reservation.
