Boldt Castle is a full-size, five-story, six-bedroom, four-bathroom, stone structure located on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands region of New York, USA.
Visual Characteristics
The castle is constructed primarily of granite and sandstone. It features a French Renaissance architectural style with multiple towers, turrets, and a central courtyard. The exterior is characterized by its imposing stone facade, arched windows, and decorative stonework. The structure stands approximately 100 feet tall at its highest point.
Location & Access Logistics
Boldt Castle is situated on Heart Island, accessible only by water. The primary point of departure for tours is Alexandria Bay, New York. Boat tours operate from the Uncle Sam Boat Tours dock at 1000 Islands International Tourism Center, 335 Water Street, Alexandria Bay, NY 13607. Travel time from Alexandria Bay to the island is approximately 15 minutes by boat. Private boat docking is available. There is no direct road access.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Boldt Castle began in 1900. It was commissioned by George C. Boldt, a wealthy hotelier and restaurateur, as a testament to his love for his wife, Louise. The castle was intended to be a summer home. Construction ceased in 1904 upon Louise's death, and the structure remained unfinished for over 70 years. The island itself is a natural landmass within the St. Lawrence River.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the partially restored rooms of the castle, including the ballroom, library, and various bedrooms. Self-guided tours allow exploration of the grounds and interior. The Power House, located on nearby Boldt Castle Island, is also accessible via a shuttle boat. Photography is permitted within the castle and on the grounds.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available on the island. Limited shaded areas are present on the grounds. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food and beverage vendors are typically present during the operating season near the tour boat docks in Alexandria Bay; on-island amenities are limited to a small gift shop.
Best Time to Visit
The castle is open seasonally, typically from mid-May through mid-October. The best time of day for photography is generally mid-morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh overhead light. Weather is most favorable during the summer months (June-August), though spring and fall offer fewer crowds.
Facts & Legends
George Boldt spared no expense in the castle's construction, importing marble from Italy and employing hundreds of workers. A unique feature is the "Alster Tower," a smaller structure on the island designed to resemble a medieval castle. The castle remains a symbol of a love story cut short, with many visitors drawn to its romantic, albeit unfinished, narrative.
