Brava Island, Nova Sintra, Cabo Verde, Africa
Brava Island is the smallest inhabited island in the Cape Verde archipelago, located in the westernmost part of the nation.
It is situated approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Fogo Island.
Visual Characteristics
Brava Island is characterized by its steep, volcanic terrain. The coastline is predominantly rocky, with limited sandy beaches. The island's interior features deep ravines and elevated plateaus, covered in dense, green vegetation, particularly in the higher elevations. The primary settlement, Nova Sintra, is built on a hillside, with houses constructed from a combination of stone and concrete, painted in various muted colors.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Brava Island is primarily via ferry from Fogo Island. Ferries depart from the port of São Filipe on Fogo and arrive at the port of Fajã d'Água on Brava. The ferry journey typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on sea conditions. There is no airport on Brava. Within the island, transportation relies on local taxis and shared minibuses (alugueres) that connect Nova Sintra to coastal villages. Roads are often unpaved and steep.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Brava Island is of volcanic origin, formed by the same geological processes that created the other islands of the Cape Verde archipelago. It is believed to have formed approximately 4 million years ago. The island was first settled in the 17th century by Portuguese colonists and later by individuals seeking refuge. Its original purpose was agricultural, with inhabitants cultivating crops on its fertile slopes.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is a primary activity, with trails leading through the island's interior and to viewpoints overlooking the ocean. The trail from Nova Sintra to Fajã d'Água is a notable route. Swimming and sunbathing are possible at Fajã d'Água beach. Boat trips around the island offer views of the coastline and opportunities for whale watching during migration seasons (typically January to March).
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic amenities are available in Nova Sintra, including small grocery stores and restaurants. Restrooms are generally available at main tourist points and in restaurants. Shade is provided by vegetation and buildings in settlements. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is present in Nova Sintra and some coastal areas, but can be intermittent in remote locations. There are no large food vendors or supermarkets.
Best Time to Visit
The best months for visiting Brava Island are from November to June, avoiding the peak of the rainy season (August to October). The island is generally cooler and less humid than other Cape Verdean islands. For photography, early morning and late afternoon light offers good illumination of the landscape. High tide is not a significant factor for most activities.
Facts & Legends
Brava Island is known as the "Island of Flowers" due to its abundant and diverse flora, a result of its higher rainfall compared to other islands. A local legend speaks of a hidden cave on the island containing pirate treasure, though no verifiable evidence exists.
