The Bronze Age Dolmen is an ancient megalithic burial structure located in a rural area of Zebbug, Malta.
Visual Characteristics
The Zebbug Dolmen consists of two large, unworked upright limestone slabs supporting a single, massive capstone. The capstone measures approximately 2.5 meters in length by 1.5 meters in width and is roughly rectangular. The overall structure stands about 1.2 meters high. The stones exhibit natural weathering and a greyish-brown coloration.
Location & Access Logistics
The Zebbug Dolmen is situated in a field off Triq l-Imdina (Mdina Road), approximately 1.5 km west of Zebbug's town center. Access is primarily by private vehicle, with limited roadside parking available on the dirt track leading to the field. Public transport involves bus routes 61 or 62 to Zebbug center, followed by a 20-minute walk along rural paths.
Historical & Ecological Origin
This structure dates to the Maltese Bronze Age, specifically the Tarxien Cemetery phase (c. 1500-700 BCE). Its original purpose was a burial chamber, likely for a single individual or a small group, which would have been covered by an earthen mound (tumulus) that is no longer present.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe the megalithic structure from the perimeter of the field. Photography of the ancient monument is permitted.
Infrastructure & Amenities
No public restrooms or dedicated shade structures are available at the site. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally reliable in the area. No food vendors are present directly at the dolmen; the nearest facilities are in Zebbug town center.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is during the early morning or late afternoon to utilize softer light and minimize harsh shadows. Visiting during the cooler months, from October to May, avoids the intense summer heat. No specific tide requirements apply.
Facts & Legends
The Zebbug Dolmen is one of approximately 20 known dolmens in Malta, representing a distinct burial practice from the earlier temple-building periods. Unlike the more elaborate temples, dolmens are simpler structures, often found in isolated rural settings, suggesting a shift in societal organization or belief systems during the Bronze Age.
