Historical & Ecological Origin

The land was acquired by the City of Brookings in 1978 for preservation and recreational use. Ecologically, it represents a remnant of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem historically found in this region, with some areas showing evidence of past agricultural use before its designation as a park.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include walking the 2.8-kilometer loop trail that circumnavigates the park's perimeter. Birdwatching is a common activity due to the diverse habitat. Observation of native flora is also possible along the marked trails.

Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available throughout the park. No food vendors are present within the park; the nearest commercial services are located 1 kilometer east on Main Avenue.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography, early morning (07:00-09:00) and late afternoon (17:00-19:00) are recommended. The months of May through September offer the most favorable weather conditions for outdoor activities. No tide considerations apply.

Facts & Legends

A specific geological feature within the park is a glacial erratic, a large boulder deposited by a glacier during the last ice age. Local anecdotal accounts suggest this boulder was once used as a marker by early settlers, though no formal documentation supports this.
