Historical & Ecological Origin

The original house, known as the Douglas Mansion, was built in 1884 for Senator James Wilson Grimes. It was purchased by Robert Bruce and Margaret Bruce in 1906, who significantly expanded and remodeled it into the Georgian Revival style, renaming it Brucemore. The estate's woodlands are a remnant of the original prairie landscape, with mature oak and maple trees.
