Cacaopera is situated approximately 15 kilometers northeast of the departmental capital, San Francisco Gotera. Access is via the CA-7 highway, turning onto local unpaved roads towards Cacaopera town. Parking is available on-site, with space for several vehicles. Public transport options are limited; local buses run from San Francisco Gotera to Cacaopera town, requiring a subsequent walk or local taxi to the archaeological zone.

The settlement at Cacaopera dates back to the Late Classic period (approximately 600-900 AD). It is believed to have been a regional center for the Lenca people. The site is situated within a tropical dry forest ecosystem.
