The installation comprises ten Cadillac models ranging from 1949 to 1963. The vehicles are positioned at an angle, with their front ends buried in the earth. The cars are frequently repainted by visitors, resulting in a constantly changing surface of spray paint graffiti. The ground surrounding the cars is a dirt field.

Cadillac Ranch is situated on the west side of Amarillo, Texas, adjacent to Interstate 40. It is approximately 10 miles west of the city center. Access is directly from the I-40 frontage road. Parking is available on the shoulder of the frontage road. No public transport services this location directly.

Cadillac Ranch was created in 1974 by the art group Ant Farm, commissioned by eccentric millionaire Stanley Marsh 3. The original purpose was to create a public art installation that would be accessible and interactive. The cars are a commentary on American consumerism and the evolution of the automobile.
