The park features a central lake, approximately 15 acres in surface area, with a maximum depth of 8 feet. The lakebed is composed of clay and silt. Surrounding the lake are approximately 50 acres of mowed grass, interspersed with mature deciduous trees including cottonwoods and elms. Public transport is served by the Mitchell Area Transit System (MATS) Route 2, with a stop located at the intersection of East 4th Avenue and Ohlman Street, approximately 0.2 miles from the park entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Cadwell Park was established in 1935 through a land donation by the Cadwell family. The park's development was part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, with the lake being artificially created through excavation. The area was historically prairie grassland prior to development.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include fishing in the lake (catch and release is encouraged), walking or jogging on the paved paths, picnicking at designated tables, and attending events at the bandstand. A children's playground is located on the eastern side of the park.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The park contains two public restroom facilities, located near the main parking lots. Shaded areas are provided by mature trees and a limited number of picnic shelters. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available throughout the park. No on-site food vendors operate within the park; however, commercial establishments are located within 0.5 miles along East 4th Avenue.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) and late afternoon (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) offer optimal lighting conditions. The months of May through September provide the most favorable weather for outdoor activities. The lake is accessible for fishing year-round, with no specific tide requirements.
Facts & Legends
A local anecdote suggests that the lake was once stocked with a single, unusually large carp, though its existence has never been officially verified. The park's bandstand has hosted numerous local musical performances since its construction.
