Construction of Castel Sismondo began in 1437, commissioned by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, the Lord of Rimini. While Matteo Nuti was the primary architect, Leon Battista Alberti is believed to have contributed to its design. Its original purpose was to serve as both a fortified residence for the Malatesta family and a defensive stronghold for the city.
