Construction of Castillo de Salgar began in 1848 and was completed in 1852. It was designed by Italian engineer Juan de Francisco for the Colombian government. Its original purpose was to serve as a customs house and a defensive post to protect the port of Barranquilla from potential naval attacks and to control maritime trade.
