The land was acquired by the City of Holland in 1966, designated for park development to commemorate the city's centennial. The park was formally opened in 1976. The area was previously agricultural land, with the Black River serving as a historical transportation route. The pond was constructed in the early 1980s as part of a stormwater management and aesthetic enhancement project.
