City Park of Gödöllő, Godollo, Hungary, Europe
The Gödöllő City Park (Alsópark) is a 28-hectare protected nature area and public park situated in the center of Gödöllő. While the Upper Garden of the Royal Palace serves ceremonial purposes, the City Park acts as the primary recreational zone for residents and visitors.
Visual Characteristics
The landscape is defined by massive, ancient trees-primarily pedunculate oaks and maples-vast lawns, and winding promenades. The Rákos stream flows through the area, adding a natural water element. The central section features the World Peace Gong, alongside modern playgrounds and sports facilities.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is located between Szabadság út and Ady Endre sétány.
Public Transport: The H8 HÉV (suburban train) stop "Gödöllő, Szabadság tér" is directly at the northern edge of the park.
By Car: Paid and free parking is available in surrounding streets, particularly near the House of Arts (Művészetek Háza).
On Foot: It is a 2-minute walk from the main entrance of the Royal Palace.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Originally part of the Grassalkovich estate, it functioned as a game park and economic area. It transitioned into a public park in the 19th century. Since 1954, it has been a locally protected nature reserve, preserving original plant communities typical of the Gödöllő Hills and fragments of the former marshy meadows.
Key Highlights & Activities

Sports & Fitness: Features running tracks, an outdoor fitness park, and a skate park.
Playgrounds: Several age-appropriate modern play areas are located in the southern section.

Best Time to Visit
The park is open 24/7. It is most peaceful in the early morning or at dusk for running. During summer, the dense canopy provides significant shade during midday heat.
Facts & Legends
Some of the oaks in the park are over 150 years old, dating back to the era when Queen Elisabeth (Sisi) resided at the palace. During winter months, the park typically hosts the municipal outdoor ice skating rink.
