Clear Creek Reservoir is a man-made lake located in Winslow, Arizona. It serves as a primary water source for the surrounding region.

Visual Characteristics

The reservoir's surface area is approximately 1,500 acres. Water color varies from deep blue to greenish-blue depending on sediment levels and depth. The shoreline is characterized by exposed rock formations and sparse desert vegetation, primarily consisting of creosote bush and various cacti. The dam structure is composed of concrete and earthfill.

Location & Access Logistics

Clear Creek Reservoir is situated approximately 15 miles northeast of Winslow, Arizona. Access is via Arizona State Route 87 (ASR 87). Turn east onto County Road 301 (unpaved, maintained gravel road) for approximately 3 miles to reach the reservoir access points. Parking is available at designated pull-offs along the reservoir's perimeter. No public transport services the reservoir directly.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Clear Creek Dam was completed in 1970. The dam was built by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to provide municipal and industrial water supply, as well as to support agricultural irrigation. The reservoir is situated within a high desert ecosystem.

Key Highlights & Activities

Boating is permitted on the reservoir. Fishing is a common activity, with species including largemouth bass and crappie. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also possible. Hiking trails are present around the perimeter, offering access to viewpoints of the dam and surrounding landscape.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the main access point near the dam. Shade is limited to natural rock overhangs and personal shade structures. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is intermittent and unreliable within the reservoir area. No food vendors are located at the reservoir; visitors should bring their own supplies.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer the best natural light. The months of April through October generally provide the most favorable weather conditions, with daytime temperatures ranging from 70°F to 95°F. Wind can be a factor, particularly in the afternoons.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that during exceptionally dry periods, the exposed lakebed reveals remnants of an old homestead, though official records do not confirm this. The reservoir's water levels are closely monitored and fluctuate significantly based on seasonal precipitation and demand.
