Clinton Lake State Park, Lawrence, USA Kansas, North America

Clinton Lake State Park is a recreational area situated in Douglas County, Kansas, west of Lawrence.

The park encompasses Clinton Lake, a reservoir created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Visual Characteristics

Clinton Lake features a water surface area of approximately 7,000 acres. The shoreline is characterized by limestone bluffs and mixed deciduous forest. The lake's water color varies from clear to a greenish-brown depending on rainfall and sediment levels. The surrounding terrain includes rolling hills and open prairie.

Location & Access Logistics

Clinton Lake State Park is located approximately 10 miles west of Lawrence, Kansas. Access is primarily via County Road 458 (also known as North 1000 Road) and County Road 460 (also known as East 1500 Road). The park is accessible by personal vehicle. Several parking areas are available throughout the park, including near the beach, marina, and trailheads. Public transportation options directly to the park are not available; visitors typically require a private vehicle.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Clinton Lake was formed by the construction of the Clinton Dam, completed in 1977 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam's primary purpose is flood control for the Kansas River basin and water supply for the region. The area surrounding the lake is part of the Flint Hills ecoregion, characterized by tallgrass prairie and oak-hickory forests.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include swimming at the designated beach area, boating (including sailing and motorboating), fishing for species such as crappie, bass, and catfish, and hiking on over 25 miles of trails. The park also offers camping facilities, picnicking, and birdwatching. Kayaking and paddleboarding are permitted on the lake.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at various locations within the park, including near the beach and campgrounds. Shaded picnic areas are provided. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available in most areas of the park, though it may be intermittent in more remote sections. Food vendors are typically located at the marina during peak season; otherwise, visitors should bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for water-based activities is from May through September. For hiking and wildlife viewing, spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer moderate temperatures. Early morning and late afternoon provide optimal lighting for photography due to lower sun angles. High tide is not a relevant factor for this freshwater lake.

Facts & Legends

A unique aspect of Clinton Lake is the presence of fossilized marine life, remnants of the ancient inland sea that once covered this region. Visitors can sometimes find fossilized shells and other marine organisms along the lakebed when water levels are low. The park is also known for its population of bald eagles, particularly during the winter months.
