Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, La Ceiba, Honduras, North America
Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge is a protected area located in La Ceiba, Honduras. It encompasses a significant mangrove ecosystem and coastal wetlands.
Visual Characteristics
The refuge features extensive mangrove forests dominated by red, black, and white mangrove species. Water channels and lagoons are interspersed throughout the area. The terrain is predominantly flat, with muddy substrates in the intertidal zones. Birdlife is a significant visual component, with numerous avian species present.
Location & Access Logistics
The refuge is situated approximately 15 kilometers east of La Ceiba. Access is primarily via the CA-13 highway. Turn north onto the unpaved road leading to the community of Los Micos. From Los Micos, boat transport is the only feasible method to enter the refuge. Local boat operators can be hired at the small dock in Los Micos. Parking is available in Los Micos, though it is informal and unsupervised.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Cuero y Salado was established as a wildlife refuge in 1987 to protect its vital mangrove ecosystems and the biodiversity they support. Ecologically, it is a Ramsar site, recognized for its importance as a wetland habitat. The area is a complex estuarine system formed by the confluence of the Cuero and Salado rivers with the Caribbean Sea.
Key Highlights & Activities
Boat tours through the mangrove channels are the primary activity. These tours facilitate wildlife observation, particularly of manatees, monkeys, and various bird species. Kayaking is also permitted in designated areas. Fishing is restricted to local communities and regulated activities.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic infrastructure is limited. Restrooms are available at the Los Micos community dock. Shade is provided by the mangrove canopy. Cell phone signal is unreliable within the refuge. Food vendors are not present within the refuge itself; provisions should be made in La Ceiba or Los Micos.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for wildlife viewing is during the early morning and late afternoon. The dry season, from December to April, generally offers more predictable weather. High tide is often more conducive to spotting manatees as they move into shallower feeding areas.
Facts & Legends
The West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) is a key species protected within the refuge. Sightings are not guaranteed but are more probable during the calmer months. A local conservation effort focuses on community involvement in protecting the manatee population.
