Devil's Town (Kuršumlija), Nis, Serbia, Europe
Devil's Town (Đavolja Varoš) is a natural monument in southern Serbia, characterized by unique rock formations. It is located approximately 90 kilometers southwest of Nis, near the town of Kuršumlija.
Visual Characteristics
The site features over 200 conical rock formations, often referred to as "earth pyramids" or "towers." These formations vary in height from 2 to 15 meters and are capped by blocks of harder, darker rock, resembling hats. The dominant color of the formations is a reddish-brown, contrasting with the surrounding green vegetation. The terrain is uneven, with visible erosion channels.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Devil's Town from Nis involves driving approximately 90-100 kilometers. The primary route is via the E80 highway towards Prokuplje, then connecting to regional roads leading to Kuršumlija and subsequently to the site. A designated parking area is available at the entrance to the natural monument. Public transport options are limited; buses run from Nis to Kuršumlija, from where a taxi or local transfer is required for the remaining 27 kilometers to the site.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Devil's Town is a geological formation resulting from millennia of erosion. The towers are composed of volcanic tuff, a softer rock, which has been sculpted by the action of water and wind. The harder andesite caps protect the underlying tuff from erosion, leading to the formation of the distinct pillar shapes. This process continues, with new formations emerging and existing ones changing over time.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk along marked trails that navigate through the rock formations, offering various perspectives. Observation decks provide panoramic views of the entire site. Two natural springs are present: Đavolja Voda (Devil's Water), known for its high acidity, and Crveno Vrelo (Red Well), characterized by its reddish water due to mineral content. Photography is a primary activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restroom facilities are available at the visitor center located near the entrance. Limited natural shade is present within the formation area, but the visitor center offers shaded seating. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally reliable throughout the site. A small cafe and souvenir shop are situated at the entrance, providing basic refreshments and local products.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal time for photography is during the early morning or late afternoon hours, when the sun's angle creates long shadows and highlights the textures of the formations. The best months for visiting are April, May, September, and October, offering mild temperatures and comfortable walking conditions. Summer months can be hot, while winter may bring snow, potentially limiting access to certain trails.
Facts & Legends
A local legend states that the rock formations are petrified wedding guests, cursed by a witch or the devil for attempting to marry siblings. Another account suggests the formations are the remnants of a devil's feast. The site was nominated as a candidate for the New7Wonders of Nature in 2007, gaining international recognition for its unique geological features.
