Visual Characteristics
The structure is a large, multi-story building constructed primarily from local limestone, exhibiting a pale yellow to cream color. Its architectural style is eclectic, incorporating elements of Baroque and Neoclassical design, characterized by ornate facades, colonnades, and balustraded terraces. The palace is positioned on a rocky promontory, surrounded by extensive landscaped gardens that feature palm trees and direct sea views.

Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of the Dragonara Palace commenced in 1870, commissioned by Marquis Emanuele Scicluna. The original architect was Giuseppe Bonavia. It was conceived as a luxurious summer residence for the Scicluna family. In 1964, the palace was converted into Malta's first casino, retaining much of its original architectural integrity.
Key Highlights & Activities
The primary activity is casino gaming, featuring a range of table games and slot machines. The complex also houses several restaurants and bars. Visitors can access the surrounding gardens and terraces, which offer panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. The venue frequently hosts private events and entertainment.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restroom facilities are available throughout the casino and dining areas. The gardens and interior spaces provide ample shade. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong across the property. Multiple food and beverage vendors, including full-service restaurants and bars, are located within the palace complex.
Best Time to Visit
The casino operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For photography of the exterior and gardens, late afternoon provides optimal lighting. The shoulder seasons of April-May and September-October offer pleasant weather conditions for exploring the outdoor areas. Evenings are recommended for experiencing the casino's atmosphere.
Facts & Legends
The name "Dragonara" is believed to derive from a local legend involving a dragon that once inhabited the caves beneath the promontory. Historically, the palace was one of the first buildings in Malta to be equipped with electricity. A unique feature is its direct access to the sea, with private lidos carved into the rock face.
