Ekom-Nkam Waterfalls, Douala, Cameroon, Africa

Ekom-Nkam Waterfalls is a two-tiered waterfall located in the Littoral Region of Cameroon, approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Douala.

Visual Characteristics

The waterfall descends in two distinct stages. The upper tier drops approximately 30 meters, followed by a second drop of about 20 meters. The water is typically clear, flowing over dark, weathered rock formations. The surrounding vegetation is dense rainforest, characterized by tall trees and a thick undergrowth.

Location & Access Logistics

To reach Ekom-Nkam Waterfalls from Douala, take the N1 highway towards Bafoussam. Approximately 70 kilometers from Douala, turn north onto a secondary road signposted for Ekom-Nkam. This unpaved road extends for about 10 kilometers to the waterfall site. Parking is available at a designated area near the base of the falls. Public transport options are limited; shared taxis (taxis-brousse) operate between Douala and nearby towns, requiring a subsequent local transfer.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Ekom-Nkam Waterfalls is a natural geological formation, carved by the Nkam River over millennia. The river flows through a region of ancient metamorphic rock. The surrounding rainforest is part of the Congo Basin's western fringe, supporting a diverse ecosystem.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the waterfall from designated viewpoints. Swimming is possible in the pool at the base of the lower tier during dry seasons. Hiking trails are present, leading to different vantage points around the falls. Local guides are often available for hire to navigate the trails and provide information about the flora and fauna.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic amenities are present at the site, including rudimentary changing facilities and a small number of local food stalls selling snacks and drinks. Restrooms are available but may not meet international standards. Cell phone signal is intermittent.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to March, when water flow is less intense and access roads are more reliable. The late afternoon, between 3 PM and 5 PM, offers favorable lighting conditions for photography due to the angle of the sun.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests that the Ekom-Nkam Waterfalls are inhabited by water spirits. It is a tradition for visitors to leave a small offering, such as a coin or a piece of fruit, at the base of the falls to ensure safe passage and good fortune.
