El Cedral Ruins, Cozumel, Mexico, North America
El Cedral Ruins is an archaeological site located on the island of Cozumel, Mexico.
This site contains remnants of a Mayan settlement.
Visual Characteristics
The ruins consist of low-lying stone structures, primarily composed of limestone blocks. The primary visible structure is a small pyramid, approximately 5 meters in height, with discernible stairways. Vegetation, including trees and shrubs, has encroached upon and partially covers some of the stonework.
Location & Access Logistics
El Cedral Ruins are situated approximately 8 kilometers south of San Miguel de Cozumel. Access is via Carretera Transversal, a paved road. Turn south onto the unpaved road marked by a sign for "El Cedral." The site is located at the end of this unpaved road, approximately 1 kilometer from the main highway. Parking is available on-site in an open dirt area. Public transportation options are limited; local bus routes do not directly service the ruins. Taxi services from San Miguel are the most practical public transport alternative.
Historical & Ecological Origin
El Cedral was established by Mayan settlers, with evidence suggesting occupation from the Postclassic period (circa 1200-1500 AD). It served as a ceremonial and agricultural center. The site is located within a tropical dry forest ecosystem.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe the main pyramid structure and surrounding smaller foundations. Walking the perimeter of the site is possible. A small cenote is located adjacent to the ruins, though access may be restricted.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic amenities are present. A small palapa provides shade near the entrance. Restrooms are available. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally reliable. Food vendors are typically present on weekends and during local festivals, offering traditional Mexican snacks.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, or between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, to avoid direct overhead sunlight. The dry season, from December to April, offers the most comfortable weather conditions. There are no tidal considerations for this inland site.
Facts & Legends
El Cedral is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement on Cozumel. A significant Mayan artifact, a stone altar, was discovered here and is now housed in the Museo de la Isla de Cozumel.
