Enguri Dam, Zugdidi, Georgia, Asia
The Enguri Dam is a hydroelectric power station located on the Enguri River, forming part of the border between Abkhazia and Georgia, near the city of Zugdidi.
It is the highest arch dam in the world, constructed primarily from concrete.
Visual Characteristics
The dam is a concrete arch structure with a height of 271.5 meters (891 feet) and a crest length of 738 meters (2,421 feet). The reservoir behind the dam has a surface area of approximately 21 square kilometers (8.1 sq mi) when at full capacity. The concrete used in its construction is a light grey color.
Location & Access Logistics
The dam is situated approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of Zugdidi. Access is via the S1 highway (Zugdidi-Gali). Turn off the S1 onto the local road leading directly to the dam. Parking is available at designated areas near the dam's base. Public transport options are limited; local marshrutkas (minibuses) from Zugdidi may travel towards the dam, but direct service is not guaranteed. The nearest major transport hub is Zugdidi Railway Station.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of the Enguri Dam began in 1961 and was completed in 1978. It was designed by the Soviet Union to provide hydroelectric power. The dam's construction involved significant engineering challenges due to the mountainous terrain and geological conditions. The reservoir inundates a valley that was previously inhabited.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the dam's scale and engineering is the primary activity. Walking across the crest of the dam provides panoramic views of the reservoir and surrounding landscape. Photography of the structure and the Enguri River gorge is possible. Access to the power station itself is restricted.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic visitor facilities are minimal. There are no dedicated restrooms or food vendors directly at the dam site. Shade is limited. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available in the vicinity.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is during the morning or late afternoon when the sun angle provides better illumination of the dam's structure. The months of May through October offer the most stable weather conditions, with less rainfall. Water levels in the reservoir fluctuate seasonally.
Facts & Legends
The Enguri Dam's construction was a massive undertaking, employing thousands of workers. A unique aspect of its operation is that a significant portion of the electricity generated is supplied to Abkhazia, despite the political complexities surrounding the region.
