The Florida State Capitol is the seat of government for the U.S. state of Florida, located in Tallahassee.

This complex comprises two primary structures: the original historic Capitol building and the newer, taller legislative tower.

Visual Characteristics

The historic Capitol, completed in 1845 and expanded in 1902, features a white, neoclassical design with a prominent dome and cupola. The newer 22-story legislative tower, constructed in 1977, is a modern, cylindrical building clad in precast concrete and glass, reaching a height of 360 feet. The complex is situated on a hill overlooking the city.

Location & Access Logistics

The Florida State Capitol is located at 400 South Monroe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32399. It is situated in the downtown area, approximately 1 mile south of the city center. Public parking is available in the Kleman Plaza garage, located directly east of the complex, and in the Bicentennial Garage, located west of the complex. Several city bus routes, including routes 1, 4, and 10, stop within a two-block radius of the Capitol.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The original Florida State Capitol building was constructed between 1839 and 1845, serving as the statehouse. It underwent significant renovations and expansions in 1902. The current legislative tower was built in 1977 to accommodate the growing needs of the Florida Legislature. The site itself is part of the Tallahassee Hills region, characterized by rolling terrain.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can tour the historic Capitol building, including the Old Senate Chamber and the Old Supreme Court. The observation deck on the 22nd floor of the legislative tower offers panoramic views of Tallahassee. Guided tours of the legislative complex are available. The Florida Historic Capitol Museum is housed within the original structure.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within both buildings. Shaded areas are present in the surrounding grounds and plazas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the complex. Food vendors and cafes are located in the nearby Kleman Plaza and throughout the downtown area.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal interior lighting and fewer crowds, visiting between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM on a weekday is recommended. The observation deck offers the best photographic opportunities during daylight hours. The months of March through May and September through November typically provide the most pleasant weather for exploring the grounds.

Facts & Legends

A unique feature of the historic Capitol is the "Florida's Story" mural located in the rotunda, depicting key moments in the state's history. It is said that the original Capitol building was constructed using bricks made from local clay.
