Access is via Route Nationale 1 (RN1) for 2 kilometers, then turning north onto a gravel road for 1 kilometer. Parking is available on-site in a designated unpaved area. Public transport to Mirebalais is available via shared taxis or buses from Port-au-Prince; from Mirebalais town, local moto-taxis can be hired to reach the fort.

Construction of Fort des Oliviers began in 1805 under the direction of General Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Its original purpose was to defend the strategic approaches to Mirebalais and control the surrounding agricultural lands. The fort is built on a natural elevation, providing a tactical advantage.

Exploration of the fort's ramparts and interior structures is permitted. Visitors can observe the original cannon emplacements. Walking the perimeter of the fort offers views of the Artibonite River valley. No organized tours are currently offered.

The optimal time for photography is in the late morning (10:00 AM - 12:00 PM) or late afternoon (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM) when sunlight casts defined shadows on the stonework. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions, avoiding heavy rainfall.

Local accounts suggest that during its active period, the fort was supplied by a secret tunnel connecting to the nearby Artibonite River, though no definitive evidence of this tunnel has been found.
