Historical & Ecological Origin
The fort, Fort James, was constructed by the British in the mid-18th century, around 1739, to defend the entrance to St. John's Harbour. It was built to protect against potential French naval attacks. The beach itself is a natural accumulation of sand deposited by marine currents.

Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is in the late afternoon when the sun is lower, providing softer light. The dry season, from December to May, offers the most favorable weather conditions with minimal rainfall. High tide is suitable for swimming.
Facts & Legends
A local anecdote suggests that during its operational period, cannons from Fort James were fired to signal the arrival of ships, a practice that has since ceased. The fort's strategic position made it a critical defensive point for the island's primary port.
