Fort Montagu is a historic fortification located on the eastern end of New Providence Island in Nassau, Bahamas.

It is the oldest standing fort in the Bahamas, constructed in the early 18th century.

Construction of Fort Montagu began in 1741 and was completed in 1743. It was built by British colonial authorities to defend Nassau from Spanish and pirate attacks. The fort is built on a coral rock foundation.

Facts & Legends

During the brief period when Nassau was occupied by the pirate Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts in 1718, Fort Montagu was surrendered without a fight. A local anecdote suggests that the fort's cannons were never fired in anger against an attacking force.
