The fort was established in 1817 by Major William Bradford. It served as a military outpost and later became the site of the U.S. Marshals Service and the federal court for the Western District of Arkansas, which had jurisdiction over Indian Territory. The courthouse, often referred to as "The Hanging Judge's Court," operated from 1875 to 1975.

Facts & Legends

Judge Isaac C. Parker presided over the Western District of Arkansas from 1875 to 1896, during which time 16 men were sentenced to death and executed by hanging at the fort. The gallows, known as "The Three-Fifteen" (referring to the 3:15 PM execution time), is preserved on site.
