Construction of Forte dos Reis Magos began on January 6, 1598, and was completed in 1600. It was built by the Portuguese under the command of Jerônimo de Albuquerque. Its original purpose was to defend the bay of Rio Grande do Norte against potential Dutch and French invasions.
