The fort consists of a central earthen rampart, approximately 3 meters high, encircling a rectangular area. Sections of the original wooden palisade remain, interspersed with reconstructed portions. The primary construction material is compacted earth, with some areas reinforced by timber. The site is largely open grassland with sparse, low-lying vegetation.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via National Route 9 (Ruta Transchaco) for approximately 50 kilometers from Concepción City, followed by a turn onto a gravel road (unmarked, local knowledge recommended) for an additional 10 kilometers. The gravel road can be impassable after heavy rainfall. Parking is available on-site in an open, unpaved area. No public transport services operate directly to Fortín Boquerón.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Fortín Boquerón was constructed in 1885 by the Paraguayan army under the command of Colonel Francisco Mancuello. Its original purpose was to serve as a defensive outpost and a base for military operations in the Chaco region during a period of border tension. Ecologically, the site is situated within the dry Chaco ecoregion, characterized by arid to semi-arid grassland and thorny scrubland.

During the Chaco War, Fortín Boquerón was the site of a significant engagement. A local anecdote suggests that during prolonged sieges, soldiers would use the dried mud from the ramparts to create a rudimentary form of bread when rations were depleted.
