Historical & Ecological Origin

The current Pleasure Pier opened in 2012, built on the site of the former Pleasure Pier which was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008. The original Pleasure Pier was constructed in 1943 by the U.S. Navy as a recreational facility. The pier's foundation is built into the seabed of the Gulf of Mexico.

A unique aspect of the pier's construction is the use of pilings designed to withstand hurricane-force winds and waves. During its time as a U.S. Navy facility, it was known as the Naval Station Galveston Pleasure Pier.
