The remaining structure is composed primarily of rough-hewn granite blocks. Sections of the walls stand at varying heights, with some reaching approximately 10 meters. Arches and window openings are visible, indicating a Gothic Revival architectural influence. Moss and vegetation have colonized many of the stone surfaces.

The ruins are situated approximately 8 kilometers west of downtown Danbury. Access is via Old Ridgebury Road, turning onto a gravel path marked as "Hearthstone Castle Trail." Parking is available at a designated lot at the trailhead, with capacity for approximately 20 vehicles. No public transport directly serves the site; the nearest bus stop is at the intersection of Old Ridgebury Road and Blackman Road, 1.5 kilometers from the trailhead.

Construction of Hearthstone Castle began in 1894, commissioned by architect and businessman George W. Smith. The original intent was to create a private residence. The site is situated on a glacial till plain, with the underlying bedrock consisting of metamorphic schists and gneisses.

Exploration of the remaining stone walls and foundations is the primary activity. Visitors can walk the perimeter of the former estate. Photography of the architectural remnants is common. No organized tours are offered.
