Het Steen Castle, Antwerp, Belgium, Europe
Het Steen is a medieval fortress located on the right bank of the Scheldt river in Antwerp, Belgium. It is the city's oldest building, dating back to the 13th century, and currently serves as a visitor center and maritime gallery.
Visual Characteristics
The structure is composed of grey sandstone and limestone blocks, featuring crenellated walls, pointed turrets, and a prominent gateway arch. The base remains medieval stonework, while upper sections include 19th-century neo-Gothic additions. The building is elevated on a stone wharf, integrated directly into the river’s quay walls.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located at Steenplein 1, 0.8km west of the Grote Markt. It is accessible by Tram 7 (stop: Sint-Paulusplaats) or a 15-minute walk from the historic center. The DeWaterbus ferry terminal is situated immediately adjacent at Steenplein, and underground parking is available at Parking Grote Markt.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Constructed between 1200 and 1225 as a fortified gateway (burchtgracht) to the city, it was originally part of a larger castle complex. It served as a prison for over 500 years before being partially demolished in the 19th century to widen the Scheldt; the remaining wing was renovated by architect Felix Pauwels in 1889.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can access "The Antwerp Story," an interactive circuit detailing the city's history, located within the refurbished interior. A rooftop observation deck offers 360-degree views of the river and port. The exterior courtyard contains the monument of the giant Lange Wapper.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The building functions as the central tourist office with restrooms, lockers, and a reception desk. It features high-speed 5G connectivity and indoor climate control. A lounge area and public terrace provide seating, and numerous food vendors are located 200 meters away at the Suikerrui.
Best Time to Visit
The exterior is best photographed at sunset when the light hits the western facade facing the river. The interior visitor center operates daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. High tide on the Scheldt provides the best visual context for the castle's original defensive relationship with the water.
Facts & Legends
A small bas-relief above the entrance arch depicts Semini, a pre-Christian deity of fertility; according to local legend, 16th-century citizens attributed the city's origins to this figure until the statue was defaced during the Counter-Reformation.
