The sandbank consists of a narrow strip of light-colored coral sand. The surrounding water is clear and shallow, transitioning to deeper blue further from the shore. Vegetation is sparse, typically limited to a few hardy coastal plants.

Hinnavaru is situated within Addu Atoll, approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) east of the island of Gan. Access is primarily by boat from Gan or other inhabited islands within the atoll. Local speedboat services are available for hire. There is no direct road access, and no dedicated parking facilities on the sandbank itself.

Hinnavaru is a natural accumulation of coral sand and debris, a common geomorphological feature in atoll environments. Its formation is a result of wave action and coral reef processes over geological time.

The dry season, from December to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions with minimal rainfall and calm seas. Low tide can expose more of the sandbank.
