Historic Jamestowne, Williamsburg, USA Virginia, North America
Historic Jamestowne is the original site of the first permanent English settlement in North America, located on Jamestown Island in James City County, Virginia.
This archaeological site preserves the remnants of the 17th-century settlement and its associated structures.
Visual Characteristics
The site features excavated foundations of colonial-era buildings, including barracks, storehouses, and a church. Exposed brickwork and earthworks are visible. The landscape is characterized by tidal marshland and the James River shoreline. Vegetation consists of trees and grasses typical of the Tidewater region.
Location & Access Logistics
Jamestown Island is accessible via State Route 31 (Jamestown Road) from Williamsburg. The settlement is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) southwest of the Williamsburg city center. Parking is available at the Colonial National Historical Park visitor center and designated areas on the island. Public transportation options are limited; bus routes do not directly serve Jamestown Island.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Jamestowne was established in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London. It served as the capital of the Virginia Colony until 1699. The island's formation is a result of alluvial deposition from the James River, creating a peninsula that was later partially eroded by the river.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the archaeological dig sites, including the foundations of James Fort and the 1608 church tower. Ranger-led programs and interpretive talks are offered. The Glasshouse demonstrates 17th-century glassmaking techniques. The Archaearium museum displays artifacts recovered from the site. Walking trails provide access to different areas of the island.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the visitor center and near the Glasshouse. Shaded areas are present along walking paths and within the visitor center. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available across the island. Food vendors are not present on Jamestown Island; visitors should plan to bring their own food or dine in nearby Williamsburg.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal lighting for photography, early morning or late afternoon is recommended. The best months for weather are April through June and September through October, avoiding the peak summer heat and humidity. Tidal conditions do not significantly impact access to the main historical areas.
Facts & Legends
A significant discovery at Jamestowne was the skeletal remains of Captain George Kendall, identified through DNA analysis, marking the first confirmed burial of a non-Indigenous individual from the 1607 settlement. The site is also associated with the legend of Pocahontas, though historical accounts of her interactions with the settlers are debated.
