Hombolo Dam, Dodoma, Tanzania, Africa
Hombolo Dam is a water reservoir located approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Dodoma, the capital city of Tanzania.
It serves as a primary water source for the surrounding region.
Visual Characteristics
The dam structure is composed of compacted earth and rockfill. The reservoir's water level fluctuates seasonally, impacting its visible surface area. The surrounding landscape consists of semi-arid savanna vegetation, characterized by scattered acacia trees and grasses.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Hombolo Dam is via the B144 road, which branches off the main Dodoma-Arusha highway (A7). The turnoff is approximately 25 kilometers from Dodoma's city center. The final 5 kilometers to the dam are on an unpaved track, which can be rough, especially after rainfall. Vehicle access is generally by 4x4. No public transport directly serves the dam. Parking is available on the dam crest, though it is informal.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Hombolo Dam was completed in 1976. It was designed and built by the Tanzanian government with the primary purpose of providing water for irrigation and domestic use in the Dodoma region. Ecologically, the dam impounds water from the Hombolo River, a seasonal river system characteristic of the Tanzanian plateau.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the dam structure and its operational capacity. Birdwatching is possible, particularly during the wet season when water levels are higher. Photography of the landscape and reservoir. Fishing is permitted for local residents, subject to local regulations.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no public restrooms or designated shade structures at Hombolo Dam. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is intermittent and unreliable. No food vendors or facilities are present at the dam site itself. Basic amenities are available in Dodoma city.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is during the early morning or late afternoon for optimal lighting conditions. The months of November through April, coinciding with the rainy season, offer higher water levels in the reservoir. During the dry season (May to October), water levels can be significantly reduced.
Facts & Legends
Hombolo Dam's construction was part of a larger national effort to improve water security in semi-arid regions of Tanzania. Local folklore sometimes attributes the dam's consistent water supply to the benevolent spirit of the land, though its functionality is scientifically engineered.
