House of the Culture, Eupen, Belgium, Europe
The House of Culture in Eupen, officially known as Kulturelles Zentrum Alter Schlachthof (Cultural Center Old Slaughterhouse), is the primary venue for contemporary arts, music, and community events in the German-speaking Community of Belgium.
Visual Characteristics
The complex is a repurposed industrial site featuring 19th-century red-brick architecture. It maintains a "loft" aesthetic with exposed steel beams, high ceilings, and expansive open halls. The renovation integrated modern glass and metal elements with the original masonry, creating a contrast between its utilitarian past and its current function as an arts space.
Location & Access Logistics
The center is located at Franckstraße 9, approximately 1.5km north of the Eupen city center.
By Train: Eupen station is a 10-minute walk (approx. 0.8km) to the southeast.
By Car: Accessible via the E40 motorway, Exit 38 (Eupen). Free parking is available on-site in the large courtyard and along Franckstraße.
Public Transport: Local bus lines stop at "Eupen Bahnhof," which serves as the nearest transit hub.
Historical Origin
The facility operated as the municipal slaughterhouse (Schlachthof) from 1889 until 1991. Following its closure, the site underwent significant decontamination and structural renovation. It reopened in its current capacity in 2015, managed by the Chudoscnik Sunergia cultural collective, to provide a centralized location for the region's diverse artistic output.
Key Highlights & Activities
Performance Spaces: Includes a large concert hall (600+ capacity), a smaller theater box, and exhibition galleries.
Events: Hosts the Eupen Musikmarathon, jazz festivals, world music concerts, and avant-garde theater productions.
Exhibitions: Rotating contemporary art installations focus on both regional and international artists.

Infrastructure & Amenities
The venue is fully wheelchair accessible with flat entrances and adapted restrooms. It features professional-grade acoustic treatment and lighting rigs in the main halls. 5G cellular coverage is reliable. The central courtyard often serves as an outdoor terrace or event space during summer festivals.
Best Time to Visit
Schedule: Activity is highest during the weekend and scheduled evening performances. The office and gallery typically operate during standard weekday hours.
Photography: The industrial brickwork is best captured in the late afternoon sun or at night when the modern glass additions are illuminated from within.
Facts & Legends
The renovation was careful to preserve functional details of the slaughterhouse, such as the overhead rail systems used for moving carcasses, which are now integrated into the gallery lighting and decor. It is considered a cornerstone of the "New Eupen" movement, shifting the city’s identity from a textile and industrial center to a cultural capital for East Belgium.
