Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, India, Asia
Jallianwala Bagh is a public garden located in Amritsar, Punjab, India. It is a site of historical significance, commemorating a massacre that occurred on April 13, 1919.
Visual Characteristics
The Bagh covers an area of approximately 6.5 acres. It features a central well, known as the Martyr's Well, and a memorial monument constructed of red brick. The grounds are primarily grass with paved pathways. Surrounding the garden are brick walls, some of which bear bullet marks from the 1919 incident. The architectural style of the memorial is modern, with clean lines.
Location & Access Logistics
Jallianwala Bagh is situated in the heart of Amritsar, approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) east of the Golden Temple. It is accessible via narrow lanes from the Golden Temple Road. The nearest major road is Lawrence Road. Parking is available in designated lots around the Golden Temple complex, requiring a short walk to the Bagh. Public transport, including auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws, readily serves the area. Amritsar Junction railway station is approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The site was originally a private garden belonging to Lala Jallan, a local landlord. It was acquired by the Amritsar Municipal Corporation after his death. The Bagh is most notably known for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, where British troops under Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer opened fire on a large unarmed gathering of men, women, and children. The current memorial was designed by the architect, Benjamin Polk, and was inaugurated in 1961.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe the Martyr's Well, a preserved section of the wall with visible bullet marks, and the Flame of Liberty monument. The central memorial structure is a focal point. The grounds are suitable for quiet contemplation. Audio-visual presentations detailing the historical events are sometimes available within the complex.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the complex. Shaded areas are limited, primarily provided by trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally good within the Bagh. Food vendors are not typically located directly within the garden, but numerous options exist in the surrounding market areas.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for visiting is during the cooler morning hours or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. The months of October through March offer the most pleasant weather conditions. There are no tide-related considerations.
Facts & Legends
A specific detail often overlooked is the presence of 16 narrow entrances and exits to the Bagh, only one of which was used by the British troops to block escape routes during the massacre. The memorial's flame is intended to burn perpetually as a symbol of remembrance.
