Kaminia Village, Hydra, Greece, Europe
Kamini Village (also known as Kaminia) is a small coastal settlement and fishing harbor located on the northwestern shore of Hydra, Greece. It is situated approximately 1 kilometer west of the main Hydra Port and functions as a quieter residential alternative to the primary town.
Visual Characteristics
The village is characterized by a miniature stone harbor filled with traditional wooden fishing boats (trechandiria). The architecture consists of small, whitewashed houses and larger stone mansions built into the sloping terrain. A prominent 18th-century red-stone fortification, the Castello, stands on the western edge of the harbor. The coastline features narrow pebble strips and rocky swimming ledges.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is primarily via a 15-minute walk along the coastal stone path from Hydra Port. The path is mostly level and follows the shoreline past Spilia and Avlaki. Alternatively, water taxis from the main harbor reach the Kamini Fishing Shelter in 5 minutes. As motor vehicles are banned, inland transport is limited to mules or walking via the upper mountain trails.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Historically, Kamini served as the shipbuilding and repair center for the Hydriot fleet during the 18th and 19th centuries. Its name is derived from the Greek word for "kiln" (kaminia), referring to the workshops once located here. The area is part of the island's karst landscape, with limestone cliffs providing the primary structural foundation for the village.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is common at the small Kamini Beach near the Castello or off the rocks at Enigma. The village is a starting point for hikes toward Vlychos Village or the Monastery of Prophet Elias. The annual "Easter of the Sailors" ceremony involves carrying the Epitaph into the sea at the Kamini harbor.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The village contains several traditional tavernas and a few small grocery stores. Public restrooms are not available as standalone units but are accessible within local establishments. 5G cellular signal remains strong due to proximity to the main town. There are no banks or pharmacies; these services require a return to Hydra Port.
Best Time to Visit
The village is best visited in the late afternoon for dinner at the waterfront tavernas as the sun sets over the Saronic Gulf. The lighting between 17:00 and 19:00 highlights the textures of the stone harbor. September and October offer warm water and reduced crowds compared to the peak summer season.
Facts & Legends
The Castello at Kamini was originally an 18th-century fort used to store ammunition; it later served as a local residence before being converted into a beach club and restaurant. Local lore suggests the harbor was a favored spot for painters and writers, including Leonard Cohen, who frequented the tavernas during his residence on the island.
