Kandolhu Lagoon, Kandolhu Island, Maldives, Asia

Kandolhu Lagoon is a marine protected area situated within the waters of Kandolhu Island in the Maldives.

This lagoon encompasses a significant portion of the island's surrounding coral reef system.

Visual Characteristics

The lagoon's water exhibits a gradient of blues, from pale turquoise near the shore to deep sapphire in deeper sections. The seabed is composed of fine white coral sand interspersed with live coral formations. Coral bommies and reef structures rise from the sand, supporting a diverse range of marine life. Visibility typically exceeds 20 meters.

Location & Access Logistics

Kandolhu Lagoon is located approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. Access is primarily via seaplane transfer from Malé to Kandolhu Island, a journey of approximately 25 minutes. Upon arrival at Kandolhu Island, the lagoon is accessible directly from the island's beaches and jetties. No public transport operates directly to the lagoon; access is managed by the resort on Kandolhu Island.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Kandolhu Lagoon is part of the Maldivian archipelago, formed by the accumulation of coral skeletons over millennia. The lagoon itself is a shallow area enclosed by a coral reef, protecting it from open ocean swells. It functions as a nursery ground for juvenile fish and a habitat for various reef-associated species. The designation as a marine protected area aims to preserve its ecological integrity.

Key Highlights & Activities

Snorkeling is permitted throughout the lagoon, with specific areas identified for optimal coral viewing. Diving excursions are available, targeting deeper reef sections and potential encounters with larger marine fauna. Kayaking and paddleboarding can be undertaken within the lagoon's calm waters. Observation of reef fish, sea turtles, and reef sharks is common.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Resort facilities on Kandolhu Island provide access to the lagoon. These include jetties for entry and exit, and shaded areas along the beach. Restrooms and changing facilities are available at the resort. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available on Kandolhu Island. Food and beverage services are provided by the resort.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for clear water visibility and calm conditions is during the dry season, from December to April. Morning hours, between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, offer favorable lighting for underwater photography due to reduced glare. High tide is generally preferred for easier access to shallower reef areas.

Facts & Legends

Kandolhu Lagoon is known for its exceptionally high density of reef fish species within a relatively small area. A specific point within the lagoon, known locally as "Turtle Point," is frequently visited by green sea turtles, particularly during the late afternoon.
