It represents the remnants of a once-significant late medieval swamp castle that served as a strategic defensive point against Ottoman expansion.

The site consists primarily of excavated stone and brick foundations and a reconstructed corner bastion. The masonry utilizes local clay bricks and rough-cut river stones. The ruins are situated on a slightly elevated mound within a landscaped park, featuring exposed wall segments that delineate the former inner courtyard and defensive perimeter.

The ruins are located on Vár Street, approximately 0.8km southeast of Kossuth Square. Access is via the local pedestrian network or by car, with street parking available on Vár Street and nearby Ady Endre Street. Local bus lines 13, 31, and 42 stop within 200 meters of the site at the main hospital or theater stops.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The castle was originally built in the 15th century as a brick-and-stone fortress surrounded by the marshes of the Kapos River. It was occupied by Ottoman forces in 1555 and remained under their control for 131 years until its recapture in 1686. Following the anti-Habsburg Rákóczi War of Independence, the fortifications were intentionally demolished in 1702 by Austrian imperial order to prevent further military use.
