Khusro Bagh, Prayagraj, India, Asia
Khusro Bagh is a walled garden complex containing the tombs of Mughal prince Khusrau Mirza and his relatives, located in Prayagraj, India.
The complex is situated near the Allahabad Junction railway station.
Visual Characteristics
The complex features three main mausoleums constructed from red sandstone. The central tomb, belonging to Khusrau Mirza, is the largest and most elaborate, featuring a domed roof and intricate carvings. The other two tombs, for Khusrau's mother and sister, are smaller but architecturally similar. The garden itself is largely rectangular, with pathways and open green spaces.
Location & Access Logistics
Khusro Bagh is located approximately 1 kilometer west of the Prayagraj city center. Access is via MG Marg (formerly Thornhill Road). Ample parking is available within the complex grounds. The nearest railway station is Allahabad Junction, which is a short walk (approximately 500 meters) from the garden's entrance. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available from the station and other parts of the city.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Khusro Bagh began in 1606 under the orders of Emperor Jahangir, as a burial site for his eldest son, Khusrau Mirza, who was later blinded and imprisoned here. The garden was designed by a Persian architect. The site is an example of Mughal garden architecture, incorporating elements of Persian garden design.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the three main tombs: the tomb of Khusrau Mirza, the tomb of Shah Begum (Khusrau's mother), and the tomb of Nithar Begum (Khusrau's sister). Photography of the architecture is permitted. Walking through the garden provides an understanding of Mughal era burial practices and garden design.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic restroom facilities are available within the complex. Shade is provided by the trees within the garden and the structures themselves. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally good within the complex. There are no on-site food vendors, but numerous small eateries and shops are located outside the main gate and along MG Marg.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is during the early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight casts longer shadows and highlights the sandstone. The most favorable months for visiting are from October to March, when the weather is cooler and drier. There are no tide-related considerations for visiting.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the ghost of Khusrau Mirza still wanders the grounds at night, lamenting his fate. Historically, Khusrau Mirza was involved in a rebellion against his father, Jahangir, leading to his eventual downfall and imprisonment within this very garden.
