Koslanda Diyaluma Falls, Badulla, Sri Lanka, Asia
Diyaluma Falls is a waterfall located in Koslanda, within the Badulla District of Sri Lanka. It is recognized as the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka.
Visual Characteristics
Diyaluma Falls cascades in two distinct tiers. The upper tier drops approximately 170 meters, followed by a lower tier of about 50 meters. The rock face is primarily granite, with water flow varying in volume based on seasonal rainfall. The surrounding vegetation is dense tropical rainforest.
Location & Access Logistics
The falls are situated 6 kilometers from Koslanda town, accessible via the Colombo-Batticaloa Highway (A4). From Badulla city center, it is approximately 40 kilometers southwest. Parking is available at designated areas near the base of the falls, often managed by local vendors. Public transport options include local buses traveling along the A4 route towards Wellawaya; disembark at the Koslanda junction and proceed with a tuk-tuk or walk the remaining distance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Diyaluma Falls is a natural geological formation, part of the Diyaluma stream which originates in the central highlands. Its formation is attributed to the erosive power of water over ancient metamorphic rock strata over millennia. There is no specific architect or construction date as it is a natural feature.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include observing the falls from the base viewing area. Hiking to the top of the falls is possible via a marked trail, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Swimming is permitted in designated pools at the base during periods of safe water flow. Observation decks are present at various points along the trail.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic facilities are available near the base, including small food stalls selling local snacks and beverages. Restrooms are present but may be rudimentary. Shade is provided by the surrounding forest canopy. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available in the vicinity.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is during the morning hours (8:00 AM - 10:00 AM) when sunlight illuminates the mist. The months of October to March generally offer the most consistent water flow following the monsoon seasons. Avoid visiting during heavy rainfall periods due to increased water volume and potential safety hazards.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests the name "Diyaluma" translates to "leap of water" or "cascade of light." A lesser-known fact is that the upper tier is often obscured by mist, making its full height difficult to perceive from the base. Visitors can access a natural infinity pool at the top of the falls, requiring a guided trek.
