La Piscinita, San Andres, Colombia, South America

La Piscinita is a natural swimming pool located on the western coast of San Andrés Island, Colombia.

This geological formation consists of a shallow, clear saltwater pool carved into coral rock.

Visual Characteristics

The pool is approximately 15 meters in diameter with an average depth of 2 meters. The water exhibits a translucent turquoise hue. The surrounding rock is porous coral limestone, light grey in color, with a rough texture. Sparse low-lying coastal vegetation, primarily salt-tolerant shrubs, grows around the perimeter.

Location & Access Logistics

La Piscinita is situated 7 kilometers southwest of the main town of San Andrés. Access is via the Circunvalar Avenue (Road 1A). Turn west onto a small, unpaved access road approximately 500 meters past the San Luis sector. Parking is available on the unpaved area adjacent to the site, accommodating approximately 10-15 vehicles. Public bus line 001, heading towards San Luis, stops within a 500-meter walk of the access road.

Historical & Ecological Origin

La Piscinita is a natural erosion feature formed by the action of waves and marine currents on the island's coral reef structure over millennia. It is classified as a coastal karst formation.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming and wading in the natural pool. Observation of small marine life within the pool. Photography of the rock formations and water clarity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

No permanent restrooms are available. Limited natural shade is provided by the rock overhangs. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. No food vendors are located directly at the site; vendors are present in the nearby San Luis town.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal water clarity and lighting for photography, visit between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The best months for weather are generally December through April, avoiding the peak rainy season (September-November). High tide is recommended for deeper swimming conditions.

Facts & Legends

Local lore suggests that bathing in La Piscinita can bring good fortune and enhance one's love life. Geologically, the pool's formation is a direct result of the island's dynamic coastal processes.
